A stock picker, also referred to as an order picker is a machinery that is quite like a forklift. It allows the operator to utilize forks to pick up a pallet. An order picker is also capable of lifting the operator up to higher shelves for picking some things, and this feature is something the forklift does not offer. Usually, order pickers are powered by electricity. These kind of machines are mainly used in a warehouse environment. Most often they are used for transporting pallets and finishing particular tasks in the stocking and shelving department.
The order picker operator sits up on a platform where they operate the controls. These controls help to direct the machinery backwards, forwards or steer it from side to side. As soon as the operator has positioned the unit in place the blades can be raised to the required level which makes it convenient for the operator. For instance, if the materials needed, are located on a shelf which the operator could not reach, then entire platform could be raised up to certain level. Due to the counterweight located at the other end, the unit remains balanced, even at higher levels.
The platform is then lowered back to its original position after the order has been picked. The order picker is then directed or driven to its next location. With the majority of models, it is possible to move the order picker whilst the platform is raised, however, some companies may have policies and procedures in place preventing such maneuvers in the name of safety. An order picker can also put pallets on a shelf. Stackers and forklifts can be utilized to complete these particular jobs at several companies instead.
