Classifications of Scissor Lifts & Aerial Lift Platforms
A scissor lift consists of a series of crisscrossed steel arms which are connected to make an X pattern. When vertically raised, the X pattern of support holds the rectangular platform that is located on top of the lifting mechanism. There are support railings along the lifting mechanism's edges to be able to keep the employees safe and help to secure their tools.
The scissor lift has a low profile, best suited for smooth surfaces such as concrete, pavement and hard dirt surfaces. These machinery use either a combustion engine or electric motor in order to move the lift and power the lifting apparatus. The operator will need to move the lift itself if he or she needs to travel horizontally, as the lift apparatus just operates the lift in a vertical way.
Rough Terrain Scissor Lift
Rough terrain scissor lifts utilize the same lifting technology as a typical scissor lift. The key difference is that the rough terrain units feature a different base that is particularly made for uneven surfaces. These units also provide higher ground clearance and oversized all terrain tires. The rough terrain scissor lifts utilize 4-wheel drive so as to easily navigate through muddy and difficult terrain.
Telescopic Boom Lift
The telescopic boom lift uses a telescoping beam which elevates both vertically and diagonally. This specific unit has a small work platform that houses controls in order to operate the boom. The controls work with a combustion engine in order to power the hydraulics which power the boom and move the lift. The telescopic boom lift has off-road capable tires and is an independent lift model.
Articulating Boom Lift
The articulating boom lift features 2 telescopic booms that are attached with a moving elbow mechanism. This lifting machinery has a small work platform or a bucket which is equipped with hand controls in order to control the boom. These are stand-alone lifts that are powered by a combustion engine. Articulating boom lifts are available with either hard surface or off-road tires. These lifts are made in order to reach on top of and over top of buildings.
Aerial Mast Lift
The aerial mast lift uses a telescopic mast so as to lift a work platform vertically into the air. Typically, these lifts are electrically powered or pneumatic powered and are self-propelled machinery. These machines provide a great solution for working in high racks within narrow warehouse aisles. It is very important to note that aerial mast lifts are not recommended for off-road application and are limited to vertical movement.
