Forklift Battery Safety
The huge industrial sized batteries used to run electric lift trucks should be charged frequently and correctly maintained. Safety measures must be followed when someone connects the battery to the charger. It is essential to check fluid levels in the battery.
Personal Protective Equipment - PPE
Eye protection is important for anybody working with a lift truck battery. Complete protection includes goggles, safety glasses, or a full face shield. The best way to protect both clothes and skin from other residue or leaked acid is to put on an approved apron on the body and thick rubber gloves on the hands.
Emergency Eyewash Station
Next to the charging place should be an emergency eyewash post. The path to the station must not be obstructed and an injured employee should be able to reach the eyewash station from the charging place in 10 seconds without running.
Charger Safety
The battery and charger must be at the same amperage. It should be turned off while the battery is being plugged in.
Open Flames
Open flames are prohibited in the vicinity of a battery and charging area. Do not permit objects like lighters or matches to be utilized while someone is inspecting the fluid levels in the battery.
Ventilation
It is vital to keep the battery charging area correctly ventilated. The recharging process can release fumes. These gases are both toxic and explosive.
