History
Salzgitter Maschinenbau AG was started during the year 1919. The company was initially founded by Anton Raky, an engineer. Raky was a pioneer in modern drilling and oil drilling technology. The first name of the company was Anton Raky, Tiefbohrungen in Salzgitter.
During 1937, the cornerstone for SMAG was laid when the manufacturing facility was purchased by the Salzgitter Group for making drilling equipment. During the year 1986, the company purchased the grab product division from Peiner AG. Soon after, Peiner was developed into an international brand in the following years. Now, SMAG is the market leader in the world, using grabs for global cargo handling applications, agriculture and waste disposal.
